Family History

 

This is a collection of pictures that represent my family history. The name Romang is cecilian hence the symbol of the flag at center.  Both of my grandfathers were in the Korean War, My mother's father wrote over two hundred letters to my grandma during that time. My other grandfather was a photography enthusiast and sent filmstrips home to my grandmother for her to develop. When he returned home he worked on a railroad to support his family. My mothers side of the family consisted of farmers while my father's side owned small stores throughout the town of Waverly.

Destino a film by Salvador Dali and Walt Disney

I couldn’t believe that I never saw this film before. In high school my art teacher introduced me to Salvador Dali thinking he would be an artist that would grab my attention, and he couldn’t have been more right. Today I have three of his paintings hanging in my room. The reason I’m so drawn to his artwork and the film Destino is the way in which he incorporates time. His paintings never change but there is always a new thing to find or a different perspective to see, his works challenge your mind. Destino to me was the Dali-world brought to life as many of his paintings were incorporated into the story. Again this short film gives me the sense of timelessness, I could play it on a loop and discover new meanings or hidden subjects that escaped me the first viewing.

If I were describing the story after my first viewing I would be struggling to remember everything that happened. I would most likely say it was a story about a woman struggling to find love. After researching the film however it is actually about Cronos and his love for a mortal woman.  Either way, this film offers the chance for interpretation and encourages imagination. Just as his paintings allow my mind to perceive and decipher, his film demands the same sort of interaction.

The visual style of this film is magnificent. The color palate used really stood out to me from the first few seconds of the film. The film uses many contrasting earth tones from light tan to dark brown. In the background a light blue covers the sky. The use of the same color palate is essential to what makes Dali’s paintings so interpretive, as they often confuse an audience on what the subject is with his use of negative and positive space. The image attached from Destino shows the difficulty of determining what the subject is. It would be difficult to take this image and trace the “negative” space, even though you know it exists.

Overall I really appreciated this film, it had stunning visual style along with a good story. The music, written by Armando Dominguez did a great job of carrying the film from begging to end. And again I mention the timelessness this film creates, for this would be an enjoyable film to watch for someone of any age.

For this project I have chosen to make a movie poster based on the band CHROMEO
 To relate to their 80's style electronic music I will make a poster heavily influenced by80's movies.

This film will be about an army of dancing legs out to get chromeo, who must defend themselves with their laser-shooting instruments. I will use a layout similar to the star wars poster in which the focus is from the middle of the page to the outside. I liked the colors used in back to the future and the background design in the first poster, both of these use rays coming from the focal point.

Definitions

Appropriation- The method of converting preexisting artwork into something new. The term itself refers to borrowing elements from sources an incorporating into another work.

Fair use- Is a term used in trademarking that grants rights to a copyrighted work without special approval from the rights of the holder.

Public domain- works that have expired copyright laws become publicly available. 28 years is the usual length of copyright laws, but extensions are allowed.

Bitmap- the process of converting images into bits. Bits,  or bitmap indexes use pixels to digitally make an image. Fomats such as JPEG, TIFF, PNG, and GIF store bitmaps.

Negative/Positive Space

                Negative space is considered an essential part of artistic composition. Negative space pertains to the emptiness of an image, often creating a unique shape of it's own. A silhouette is an example of how an object is created through the use of negative space. Positive space would be the area in which the subject covers. The use of balance and symmetry between negative and positive space are techniques used to alter an images perception. The image below is an example of how negative and positive space can work as symmetrical portions to create two different subject

 This is an example of space within an image. In this image the photographer positions the camera over the subjects and frames them in the lower left corner. This technique was used to create an image that captures the vastness of the sea. When we look at it we feel stranded with the sailors.




 This image nearly uses the same amount of negative space as the image before, but the feeling expresses is the exact opposite. Although both have a feeling of entrapment the image below gives the viewer a way out from the emptiness. Whereas image of the ocean has a more negative feeling of eternity.
